Pondering thoughts about the future

Late last week, I was at the mall running an errand. I had about 2 1/2 hours to kill before I had to return to campus, so I sat in my car. As I waited, I saw this fairly young woman (in her early 30's) taking a stroller out of her car. She had what looked like her 4-5 month old daughter with her. She paid precise caution to assembling the stroller and then placing her child in it. Just one vehicle away from her, I noticed her struggle a little bit, but at the same time she kept her cool and what I saw was this nurturing mother.

After observing this woman with her baby, I began to ask myself, "Will I ever get to a point in my life where I'll become a mother?" I'll be honest. I've always told my mother that she may not be getting anymore grandchildren on top of the 3 she already has. A part of me believed that maybe it wasn't "in the cards" for me to become a mother. The other part of me believed that I would find "Mr. Right", get married, and possibly have children and we'd bring them up in this "crazy" world together.

My thoughts bring me back to the last time I visited my family in So Cal. I was holding my (second) cousin's 8 month old daughter and enjoyed playing with her and touching her chubby, little arms and cheeks. But then I started thinking about her future. What is she going to be like when she becomes a teenager? Will she start rebelling because of peer pressure or will she be this studious adolescent who listens to her parents? I know that having children is a BIG responsibility and it's very hard work, but I do hear that the rewards are great.

Yesterday, I happened to be in the art supply aisle at Wal-Mart when I heard this familiar voice. It was my ex co-worker, Mari, who I hadn't seen since April. We were chatting away and as I asked her 7 year old daughter a question, Mari's 7 month old son just kept staring at me. I started making faces at him & went right for touching his cheeks! He would just smile and wouldn't give up staring at me. I told her that I wish I had the same "animal" magnetism on older guys as I did with the younger ones! ;)

So with all these babies that have crossed my path lately, is this some sort of sign? Is my biological ticking? It's hard to say. I know that God has a plan for everyone and if I'm meant to be a wife and mother, then so be it. Otherwise, I'll continue living as a content, single woman.

A Night at the Movies

Last night, I didn't have to venture very far to see a movie. I turned on the TV and started watching The Notebook. I know this movie came out in 2004, but I never got around to watching it the first time.

Now I know why so many women fell in love with this movie. It had its sad moments, yet it was very romantic. Ok, I'll admit that I cried my eyes out during several scenes. I don't think I've ever cried so much while watching a film. Call me a hopeless romantic. Anyway, it's the typical scenario of boy meets girl, then boy loses girl, then girl finds boy before she marries someone else hoping there still might be a chance with boy, and then she must choose who she loves more...the poor, down-to-earth boy or the rich, All-American boy? You get the point. And of course you know how the movie ends...they live happily ever after despite a few obstacles. Don't you just wish the "happily ever after" part could happen in real life? Yes, I do too, but life just isn't that simple.

I do have to say that if I could go back in time, it would probably be to the 1940s. I loved the clothes and the styles from this era, and the music was pretty mellow too.

A (K)night I will soon remember!

Ok, so my favorite band, New Kids on the Block (if you haven't guessed it by now) are coming to town! For weeks I had been wondering when they'd be touring the West Coast. Well, on May 16th, during their performance on the TODAY show, the new dates were announced and I am now on countdown mode! :)

I had every intention of going to the L.A. show, scheduled for October 8th, but opted not to go because of school and the fact that my friend, H6 (the # distinguishes her from the others since she & the other 5 have the same name), couldn't make it. Then there's the San Diego show, which is now taking place two days before Turkey Day. I plan on attending this show with my (almost--eek!) 25 year old niece, who lives in SD. I know two shows might be a bit too much, but hey, I'm making up for lost time! If I could attend more, I would. I've read that some other fans will be attending 4+ shows!

I still remember the first time I saw the Kids in concert, which was in December 1989 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. Unfortunately, the last time I saw them was in April 1994 at the Konocti Harbor Resort. The Konocti concert didn't really count since Jon wasn't there. :(

However, I predict that the best concert ever & the one I'll never forget will be on October 10th, when 3 of my new friends (all women, of course) and I have VIP tickets for the San Jose show! Ok, so we have to drive about 2 hours, but it'll all be worth it! Our VIPs include a pre-party show, some cool gifts, awesome seats, and a meet & greet with the guys! Though my friends & I won't know exactly where we'll be sitting 'til the day of the concert, we're all ecstatic because our dreams are finally coming true! Someone pinch me because after 20 years, I may finally get to meet my celebrity/non-celebrity crush, Jonathan Knight! :)

I must say that 2008 started off a bit rocky for me for various reasons. I'd say, though, that within the last 3 months or so, I've felt a lot happier than I did before. I just have to remember to stay positive and be grateful for everything I do have!

Dose of Reality

Several months back, my niece told me about this store in a neighboring town where you can sell clothes you no longer want & possibly get some money back for them. So last Friday, I finally had time to go to this store to try selling my old pair of jeans. We waited for about 30 minutes when I noticed my niece's name was written on the board. Ok, so they finished looking at her stuff, but what about mine? I went up to the young store clerk & she told me that they couldn't buy any of my jeans. The good news for my niece was that they were buying some of her stuff. This was not a great night for me. :(

It turns out that this store only purchases items to sell to a younger democraphic, meaning if you're 25 years or younger OR you're under a size 7, they'll gladly buy your items. Sadly, all my 22 year old niece could say to me was, "Well, I sometimes see mothers in the store too." Yes, these mothers go to this store because they're selling their kids old clothes or because they are a size 0 to 4! Even though I'm trying my hardest to lose some weight, I'm NEVER going to be wearing anything that resembles what a teen or 20-something wears these days. Can I help it if I have curves that I prefer to cover? Also, do you know how hard it is to shop when you're height challenged? I dress to be comfortable, not uncomfortable. Ok, so maybe that's my problem. Whatever!

Btw, on our way back through town, guess who I saw heading towards us in the opposite direction? Yes, it was none other than Mr. Cutie. Boy, was he a sight for sore eyes! Actually, I saw a photo of him about two weeks ago in the local newspaper. The man sure knows how to dress for summer: t-shirt, shorts and flip flops.

On the bright side, I recently met two young women (both in their 20s)--on separate occasions--and we started talking about things when they asked me my age. One guessed 22 or 23 & the other 25. Then I told them my real age & they couldn't believe it! These compliments sure brightened up my day! :) I owe it all to my parents for my good genes!
